I-940 Historic Victory

We made history tonight! Tonight, Washington voters resoundingly said ‘Yes’ to improving training and saving lives, and Washington has become the first state in the nation to pass a ballot measure on police training and use of force directly by the people. As of 8:30 p.m., Initiative 940 was passing by almost 60% – with more than one million voters approving the measure.

Our victory in Washington shows what we can do when we join together across all walks of life. Regardless of where we come from or what we look like, whether we're black, brown, or white - we can win commonsense reforms just like we have in the past.

Yes on 940 began as a grassroots movement led by families who were directly impacted - who have lost loved ones. Today’s win demonstrates that when people of all races stand together, we have the power to make our communities safer for everyone – no exceptions. We did it in Washington – and we can do it across the nation.

On this campaign we've said no to deceitful and fear-mongering rhetoric that's meant to divide us by background, politics, and race, or make this an issue of community members vs. police or black vs. white. People of all races support better policing and law enforcement of all races strive to protect and serve their communities. You can both support law enforcement and support better policing. What we have in common is greater than that which divides us and that's what Washington voters have proven tonight.

Thank you for joining us in this movement! The actions you took in the streets, on the phones, in your community and on the ballot helped bring us to this historic victory. Tonight we celebrate a victory, and because we know that a movement continues beyond an election, tomorrow our coalition will continue working towards justice.

In celebration & gratitude,
